Why Christmas in Santa Fe is the Most Magical Time of the Year

Christmas time around the world is absolutely spectacular. Every country, region, and city have their own unique spin on the classic holiday – including Santa Fe. If you’ve ever ventured to the great city of Santa Fe, you know just how much we love the winter holidays!

With so many events, so many traditions, Christmas time in Santa Fe is simply magical. If you’re looking for a Christmas vacation destination, there’s no place better than Santa Fe for the holidays. Why? Well, keep reading for your answer!

Traditional Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Historic Santa Fe Plaza

While watching a gigantic Christmas tree light up and adorned with hundreds of decorations is magic in itself, the true beauty of the ceremony is in the community gathering. All of Santa Fe comes out to croon Christmas carols, drink hot chocolate, and meet the jolly old man himself.

When you experience a Santa Fe tree lighting, you can’t help but be overjoyed with the Christmas spirit!

Experience the Farolito Walk

Ready for the most breathtaking Santa Fe Christmas experience yet? As the most favored Santa Fe tradition, the Farolito Walk should not be missed. Canyon Road on Christmas Eve lights up with farolitos (sand filled paper bags with votive candles) and it is such a glorious sight. The entire road is lined with farolitos, creating a marvelous and unparalleled environment.

When you visit Santa Fe this winter, make it a point to participate in the Farolito Walk – words simply cannot do it justice.

Take in the Santa Fe Atmosphere

Although Santa Fe is filled to the brim with Christmas and holiday events starting after Thanksgiving weekend, one of the best things to do is simply take it all in. Go for a walk downtown and see the shops and landmarks glowing with holiday lights. Watch as shoppers and locals travel throughout the downtown area with a smile on.

The Santa Fe area, while popular, miraculously tends to stay uncrowded during the holidays (with the exception of the actual holiday days). This creates a one-of-a-kind, unmatched holiday atmosphere. Here is where you’ll find true holiday magic. Children peering through shop windows, adults greeting each other with “Merry Christmas!” and “Happy Holidays”. Santa Fe truly knows what the holiday season is all about.

Hiking and Vacation Rentals – A Match Made in Santa Fe Heaven

Everyone knows that hiking in Santa Fe is simply unexplainable. Between the environment, the views, and the experiences only Santa Fe can provide, it’s an unparalleled adventure. When you visit Santa Fe next, make sure you find time to explore these trails.

Dale Ball Trail

The Dale Ball Trail system is a 22 mile network of trails in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Located a short distance from downtown Santa Fe, it is the quickest way to get from the city into the mountains. It offers great opportunities for beginners and advanced hikers alike, along with amazing views of both the surrounding wilderness and back towards the city.

Aspen Vista Road Santa Fe National Forest

Located about 12 miles from town, the Aspen Vista picnic area is where you’ll begin your journey. The terrain is perfect for walking with friends, family members, and even your furry friends. While there’s plenty of trails and walking to be had, the majority of visitors complete 1.5 to 2 miles of hiking before coming to a gorgeous overlook. From there, the Santa Fe visitors turn around to complete the scenic loop and head back to the comfort of their vacation rental from Adobe Destinations!

The Canyon Trail at Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument

This wonderful hiking trail is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, about an hour drive south of Santa Fe. The trail takes approximately 2 hours to complete, so bring plenty of water, comfortable shoes, and weather appropriate attire. Bringing sunscreen isn’t a bad idea either! While many may gawk at the time needed to complete the entire trail, the views from the ridge make the trek worth it!

The Nature Conservancy’s Santa Fe Canyon Preserve Trail

Looking for a family-friendly hiking trail in Santa Fe? This 1.3-mile trail takes guests along the Santa Fe River and historic dam site. Throughout the trail, you’ll learn about the history of the Nature Conservancy, the Santa Fe River area, and see beautiful wildlife and plants. Be on the lookout for beaver ponds! Be advised that this trail is for pedestrian use only. Bikes and dogs are strictly prohibited on this Santa Fe hiking trail.

Atalaya Mountain Trail

As the closest hiking trail to the center Santa Fe, this is a “not to be missed” outdoor adventure! Since it features easy to moderate hiking, many people will visit this trail while vacationing in Santa Fe. The trail also provides some of the most breathtaking views of the city, the valley, and so much more. Depending on what time you visit, perhaps you’ll catch one of the legendary Santa Fe sunrises or sunsets.

Rio en Medio Trail ‑ Santa Fe National Forest

This is truly Santa Fe’s hidden gem trail. Why? Because it’s the hardest to find and one of the more difficult hikes around. This 8-mile trail is found off a dirt road in Rio en Medio and features extraordinary hiking, natural elements, and a waterfall – if you’re up for the challenge. Should you choose to embark on this hike, be handy with a map and be prepared to spend all day on the trail. It’s a tough one!
